Preferred Family Medicine Expands Into Clinical Research

Introducing Reno Clinical Trials — a new clinical research department created to bring research opportunities to our patients and the broader Northern Nevada community.

At Preferred Family Medicine, we have always believed that primary care should be about more than treating illness when it occurs. It should also be about finding better ways to prevent disease, improve health, and bring new treatment options to the patients and communities we serve.

Why Clinical Research at a Primary Care Practice?

Many people associate clinical trials with large academic medical centers or specialty practices. Yet some of the most common health conditions in our community are managed every day in primary care.

High blood pressure. Diabetes. Obesity. Migraine. High cholesterol. Women's health concerns. Respiratory illnesses. Preventive care.

Primary care is often the tip of the spear in medicine — where health problems are first identified and where patients receive much of their ongoing care. We believe primary care patients should also have opportunities to contribute to, and potentially benefit from, the research that shapes the future of medicine.

That is one of the primary reasons we created Reno Clinical Trials.

Our goal is to help bring high-quality clinical research into the community while maintaining the personal, patient-centered approach that has always been central to Preferred Family Medicine.

What Is Reno Clinical Trials?

Reno Clinical Trials is the clinical research division associated with Preferred Family Medicine in Reno, Nevada.

Our research team works to develop partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies, clinical research organizations (CROs), and other research sponsors conducting clinical studies.

Studies may evaluate:

  • Investigational medications or therapies
  • New uses for existing treatments
  • Medical devices or diagnostic technologies
  • Approaches to disease prevention
  • Treatments for common chronic health conditions
  • Women's health and preventive health strategies
  • Other areas relevant to primary care and community health

The specific studies available will change over time as new research opportunities become available.

Who Can Participate in a Clinical Trial?

You do not need to be a Preferred Family Medicine member to participate in research through Reno Clinical Trials.

Clinical trials have specific eligibility requirements based on factors such as age, medical history, medications, laboratory results, or the condition being studied.

Some studies seek participants with a particular medical condition. Others may need healthy volunteers.

Joining our research registry does not obligate you to participate in a study. It simply allows our research team to contact you if we have a future research opportunity that may be a potential match.

What Does Participating in Research Involve?

Every clinical trial is different. Depending on the study, participation may involve office visits, questionnaires, physical examinations, laboratory testing, medications or other study treatments, and follow-up with our research team.

Before deciding whether to participate, potential participants receive information about the study through an informed consent process. This includes an explanation of the purpose of the research, what participation involves, potential risks and benefits, alternatives, and the participant's rights.

Participation in clinical research is completely voluntary. For existing PFM patients, choosing not to participate will not affect your medical care or your relationship with Preferred Family Medicine.

Are Clinical Trials Paid?

Some clinical studies provide compensation to participants for their time, travel, or other study-related requirements.

Compensation varies considerably from one study to another. When compensation is available, the research team will explain it before you decide whether to participate.

Study-related visits, tests, medications, or procedures may also be provided at no cost when specified by the particular research protocol.

Areas of Research Interest

Because Reno Clinical Trials grew from a community-based family medicine practice, we are particularly interested in research that reflects the health concerns we see in everyday clinical practice.

Weight Management & Obesity
Diabetes & Metabolic Health
Cardiovascular Risk Factors
Migraine & Headache Disorders
Women's Health
Fatty Liver & Metabolic Liver Disease
Respiratory Conditions
Vaccines & Infectious Disease
Preventive Medicine
Healthy Volunteer Studies
Vision & Eye Health
Other Primary Care Conditions

What Does This Mean for Existing PFM Patients?

For most Preferred Family Medicine patients, nothing about your regular care changes.

Reno Clinical Trials operates as a dedicated research program, with research activities kept distinct from your routine medical care.

What does change is that our patients — and the broader Reno and Northern Nevada community — may now have access to research opportunities that previously required traveling elsewhere or finding a study independently.

If we believe an active study may be relevant to you, we may make you aware of the opportunity. The decision to learn more or participate is always yours.

Interested in Future Research Opportunities?

We are building a registry of people who would like to hear about current and future clinical research opportunities in Reno.

You may be interested if you:

  • Have a medical condition for which research studies are being conducted
  • Are interested in learning about investigational treatment options
  • Would like to contribute to the development of future medical treatments
  • Are a healthy adult interested in healthy-volunteer research
  • Simply want to be notified when new studies become available

Joining the registry is not the same as enrolling in a clinical trial. If a potentially appropriate study becomes available, our research team can provide additional information and determine whether you may qualify.

Reno Clinical Trials

Research Today.
Better Health Tomorrow.

Medicine advances because patients, clinicians, scientists, and research organizations work together to ask important questions and find better answers. We invite PFM patients and members of the Northern Nevada community to learn more about upcoming research opportunities.

Participation in clinical research is voluntary. Submission of information to a research registry does not guarantee eligibility or enrollment in a clinical trial. Individual studies have specific eligibility criteria, risks, benefits, requirements, and informed consent procedures.
