Circumcision

Preferred Family Medicine Circumcision Service

For parents seeking circumcision for their newborn child in the Reno-Tahoe area, we offer the Plastibell procedure for active members and non-members. We understand that some pediatric offices do not offer circumcisions, so we offer the following cash-pay circumcision procedure for a simple, transparent fee. We do not bill insurance, and payment is expected upfront. We will provide an invoice upon request should you decide to submit it to your health insurer on your own. Fees include all follow-up appointments related to the procedure. We recommend scheduling the circumcision as soon as possible after birth, and not later than 14 days of age.

Our physicians, trained in the specialty of Family Medicine, have experience in newborn care, which includes performing circumcisions. Procedures and/or conditions deemed out of the scope of practice for family medicine will be deferred to a board-certified urologist. Details about these procedures may be found below. Do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Circumcision for Baby Boys

What is circumcision?

Circumcision is a surgery that removes the skin that covers the tip of the penis, called the "foreskin" (). Circumcision is usually done when a baby boy is between 1 and 10 days old. It is more common in some parts of the world than others. Circumcision is also a common tradition in some religions.

Should I have my baby circumcised?

There is no easy answer, and different people feel differently about this decision.

Circumcision has some benefits. But it also has some risks. After talking with your baby's doctor, you will have to decide for yourself what is right for your family.

What are the benefits of circumcision?

Circumcised boys seem to have slightly lower rates of:

●Urinary tract infections

●Swelling of the opening at the tip of the penis

As adults, circumcised males seem to have slightly lower rates of:

●Urinary tract infections

●Swelling of the opening at the tip of the penis

●Penis cancer

●HIV and other infections that you catch during sex

●Cervical cancer in the women they have sex with

Even so, the risks of these problems are small, even in people who have not been circumcised. Also, people who are not circumcised can lower these extra risks by:

●Cleaning their penis well

●Using condoms during sex

What are the risks of circumcision?

Risks include:

●Bleeding or infection from the surgery

●Damage to the penis

●A chance that the doctor will cut off too much or not enough of the foreskin

●A chance that sex won't feel as good later in life

Only about 1 out of every 200 circumcisions leads to problems. There is also a chance that your health insurance won't pay for circumcision.

How is circumcision done in babies?

The Plastibell circumcision is a safe and commonly used method for newborn and infant circumcision. After gently cleaning and numbing the area, a small, clear plastic ring (the Plastibell) is placed under the foreskin, over the head of the penis. A special string is then tied tightly around the foreskin, securing it over the ring. This cuts off blood flow to the foreskin, which allows it to naturally separate and fall off along with the ring—usually within 5 to 10 days. The procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and typically causes little discomfort when performed at a young age. Parents are given detailed aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing.

If you have your baby circumcised, his doctor or nurse will give you instructions on how to care for him after the surgery.
